第一篇:Notre Dame cathedral

the novel entitled Notre Dame cathedral was written by an eminent french writer victor hugo. it is hugo first romantic fiction about a french story which happened in the 15 century. this romantic style of his writing can be felt the beautiful world, but he also pointed the dark

power in the black, especially the ruling class's cruelty. in Notre Dame cathedral, all beautiful is good all swallows by the might and the evil, the lower level people's weak strength in under the king power rule, in the benighted society, only can be reduced to ashes.

Notre Dame cathedral is mainly about a love story but sadly. esmeralda, a beautiful 16 year old gypsy with a kind and generous heart, captures the hearts of many men but especially quasimodo's adopted father, claude frollo. frollo is torn between his lust and the rules of the church. he orders quasimodo to get her. quasimodo is caught and whipped and ordered to be tied down in the heat. esmeralda seeing his thirst, offers him water. it saves her, for she captures the heart of the hunchback. she is later accused of the murder of phoebus whom frollo killed in jealousy, and is sentenced to death by hanging. quasimodo saves

her by bringing her to the cathedral under the law of sanctuary. frollo rallies the truands(criminals of paris)to charge the cathedral. the king, seeing the chaos, vetoes the law of sanctuary and commands his troops to take her out and kill her. when quasimodo sees the truands, he assumes they are three to hurt esmeralda, so he drives them off. frollo betrays esmeralda by handing her to the troops and watches while she is hanged. quasimodo pushes him from Notre-Dame to his death. he then goes to esmeralda's grave, lies next to her corpse and eventually dies of starvation.

when i finished reading, what in my mind is not the beautiful girl but the ugly, kind-hearted of bell ringer, quasimodo. in his mind, there is a place that hold warm water, the water the gypsy girl gave him, and also brought him the love. the fiction not only show us the pure love of quasimodo, but also reveal the dark background in society at that time. under the king's control, people sadly crippled by the chains of discrimination, no choice, no freedom. i am thinking that at that time quasimodo's love just like a beautiful but fragile flower in the rainstorm, a bright sunshine but faint in the dark, even though ,there is still a ray of hope in people's mind.
